How to Set SMART Goals with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy | The Great Courses Plus

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a psycho-social intervention that aims to improve mental health. CBT focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful cognitive distortions and behaviors, improving emotional regulation, and the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems.

What does cognitive behavioral therapy involve? CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.

What are three of the goals of cognitive behavioral therapy?the promotion of self-awareness and emotional intelligence by teaching clients to “read” their emotions and distinguish healthy from unhealthy feelings. helping clients understand how distorted perceptions and thoughts contribute to painful feelings. SMART is a mnemonic acronym, giving criteria to guide in the setting of objectives, for example in project management, employee-performance management and personal development. The letters S and M generally mean specific and measurable.

  • Measurable: Success can be measured by the number of applications, interviews and job offers.
