The Manhattan Transfer is a Grammy award-winning jazz vocal group founded in 1969 by Tim Hauser, that explored a cappella, vocalese, swing, standards, Brazilian jazz, rhythm and blues, and pop.
Their 5th album: “Extensions”, featured this cover version of “Birdland”, an instrumental by the jazz fusion group, Weather Report, with lyrics by Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. One of the most popular jazz recordings of 1980, “Birdland” won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, while Janis Siegel won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Arrangement.
The Manhattan Transfer is by far my favorite vocal group of all time. I purchased every LP they released and saw them every time whenever they performed in the greater Los Angeles area.
Their live concerts at The Hollywood Bowl and The Greek Theater were legendary.
“Birdland” is my most favorite track of all of their tracks. Janis Siegel’s vocal arrangement is absolutely stellar!
Having been compressed for LP mastering, I wanted to brighten it up and bring it into the new millennium. I raised the vocals 5% and gave them a brighter EQ. I made the synthesizers sound just a bit “throatier” by expanding the dynamic range ever so slightly. The drums and bass got just a bit of EQ to make them pop & sizzle.
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Electric Piano & Synths, Drums & Bass into 4 separate tracks. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, EQ, and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
