Mega Disasters: Gamma Ray Burst Causes Worldwide Extinction (S2, E2)

Scientists at the University of Kansas believe gamma ray bursts were responsible for a mass extinction on Earth 450 million years ago. The gamma rays strip away the ozone layer and generate chemical smog, in Season 2, Episode 2, “Gamma Ray Burst.”

A gamma ray, also known as gamma radiation, is a penetrating form of electromagnetic radiation arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. It consists of the shortest wavelength electromagnetic waves and so imparts the highest photon energy. Wikipedia
