Reiki therapy is based on an Eastern belief that vital energy flows through your body. A Reiki practitioner uses gentle touch — or places their hands just above your body — to help guide this energy in a way that promotes balance and healing. We do Reiki treatments on a massage table with low lights and gentle, calming, relaxing music. The client remains fully clothed but removes shoes, glasses, and bulky jewelry. Sheets, blankets, and often a bolster under the knees for the utmost comfort. As the practitioner moves their hands about your body. They may lightly touch you or have their hands just above your skin. You may experience sensations such as heat or tingling. Some people report visualizations, simple colors or pictures, and even memories.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese stress reduction and relaxation technique that promotes healing, administered by a practitioner “laying on hands” on an unseen “life force energy” that flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki is two Japanese words – Rei, which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power,” and Ki, which is “life force energy.” So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects, including relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and wellbeing. Many have reported astonishing results.
Reiki is a simple and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works with other therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Reiki is a straightforward technique not taught in the usual sense but transferred to the student in a Reiki “attunement” given by a Reiki master, allowing the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone.
While Reiki is spiritual, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in learning and using Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their spirituality rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
While Reiki is not a doctrine, living and acting in a way that promotes harmony with others is still important. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.
During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Mikao Usui added the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came partly from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan, whom Mikao Usui admired. Mikao Usui developed The Ideals to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose was to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. For the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for their healing and take an active role in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself for it to be a complete system. The ideals are guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

Reiki therapists believe self-treatments can help patients continue receiving Reiki’s benefits daily. This document details Reiki self-treatments, which you can perform on yourself at home, at your own discretion. You can adapt these to meet your own needs.
Why is Reiki self-treatment for me?
Reiki is a complementary therapy available to patients. Treatments provided by trained Reiki Master Therapists and patient-administered self-treatments are beneficial in supporting cancer patients’ healing journeys by:
- Promoting relaxation
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Increasing energy levels and reducing fatigue
- Promoting an increased sense of positive wellbeing
How do I prepare for a Reiki self-treatment session?
The following suggestions can help you prepare for your reiki self-treatment. Read this information carefully.
- Before beginning, remind yourself that Reiki is the universal life force energy that already exists within everyone. Reiki energy strengthens the body’s natural healing abilities.
- We encourage patients to perform their reiki self-treatment whether they feel well. View your reiki self-treatments as special times you can set aside during the day to be peaceful.
- Set aside a regular time each day to perform your reiki self-treatments. We suggest you start with a 20-minute self-treatment first thing in the morning and then another 20-minute self-treatment at night. We can adjust the time of day to fit your schedule or more extended sessions (30 to 60 minutes).
- Find a safe and comfortable space in your home to perform your self-treatments. Try to use this same space regularly. You can perform these self-treatments sitting in a chair or lying on your back on a sofa, bed, or the floor.
- Unless you need someone present in the room for your care and safety, consider performing your self-treatments alone in the room.
- Create a quiet environment without distracting noise. Many patients find it helpful to play some relaxing instrumental music during their self-treatments. Later in this document, we provide a few examples of reiki session music.
- When ready to start your reiki self-treatment, go to your designated space, turn on your relaxing background music, and remove your shoes. If you are reclining, place a pillow under your head and put a rolled-up second pillow under your knees. For comfort, place a blanket over your body to stay warm. Close your eyes. Relax your body and mind. Notice and note any unique places in your body or mind that need special attention in your session. Remind yourself that your reiki self-treatment is being performed for the highest and greatest good. Breathe in easy and relaxing breaths during your self-treatment. Often it helps to focus your attention on your breath and body as you perform the various hand positions.
Try to follow the hand position instructions in the order described below. However, make any adjustments you believe will be beneficial to you. For a 20-minute self-treatment, I suggest you perform each hand position for two minutes, but don’t worry about the exact time. You may need to do some of the hand positions for a longer time than others. With practice, you will memorize the hand positions. Please don’t worry about perfectly doing the hand positions. Simply relax and do the best you can. That will be good enough. Finally, place your hands in other places on your body that you feel need relaxation and healing.
Hand Position 1: Begin your reiki self-treatment by gently placing your hands together in a prayer position in the middle of your chest, just below your chin. Keep your hands in this position for a moment or two while focusing on your in-breaths and out-breaths. Once again, breathe slowly and deeply to promote relaxation of your body and mind.
Hand Position 2: Gently place both hands on top of the head. Breathe in deep and relaxed breaths. Focus your attention on your hands on the top of your head. Allow this hand position to relax the muscles and skin on your head.
Hand Position 3: Gently place both hands over your eyes. Again, breathe in deep and relaxed breaths. Focus your attention on your hands over your eyes. Try not to place your hands over your nose for your breathing comfort. Allow this hand position to relax the muscles and skin in your forehead, face, and eyes.
Hand Position 4: Gently place your right hand over your throat and the left hand over your heart. Continue to breathe in deep and relaxed breaths. Focus your attention on your throat and heart. For your comfort, try not to place your hand with too much pressure over your throat. Allow this hand position to relax your neck, throat, and upper chest muscles.
Hand Position 5: Gently place your hands just below the breast line. The middle fingers should be touching each other. Continue to breathe in slow and deep breaths. Focus your attention on the area under your breasts. Allow this hand position to relax the muscles in the center of your chest and rib areas.
Hand Position 6: Move your hands one hand-width down from your breast line, gently placing them over the upper stomach and in the solar plexus area. Continue to breathe in slow and deep breaths. Focus your attention on this area of the body. Allow this hand position to relax the muscles in this area.
Hand Position 7: Place your hands over the stomach and navel area. Continue to breathe in slow and deep breaths. Focus your attention on this area of the body. Allow this hand position to relax the muscles in this area.
Hand Position 8: Gently place both hands on the shoulder muscles. Continue to breathe in slow and deep breaths. Focus your attention on this body area, and allow this hand position to relax the muscles.
Hand Position 9: Gently place your hands above the waistline and the kidney area. Continue to breathe in slow and deep breaths. Focus your attention on this body area, and allow this hand position to relax the muscles.
Hand Position 10: Gently place your hands on either the tops of your feet or the soles of your feet. To make this position easier, cross your left leg over your right knee to reach your left foot. Cross your right leg over your left knee to get your right foot. Don’t strain yourself. Just do the best you can.
What music should I play during my self-treatment?
Play some relaxing instrumental music as you perform your self-treatments. Start with the one above.
No prior training, education, or experience is necessary to enter the Reiki training or “attunement process.”
In this process, the Reiki master transfers the attunement energy and healing techniques to the student.
Reiki training varies, but most students learn about:
- the energies around the body
- how to work with healing energy
- the ethics of working with clients
Preparation for attunement may include avoiding alcohol and caffeine for 1–3 days, meditation, focusing on nature, and releasing negative emotions. There are three levels of mastery. Those who reach the “Master” level can teach others and practice from a distance.
Reiki is a complementary form of energy therapy. Advocates believe that there is an energy field around the body and that disrupting it can lead to ailments. Reiki therapy aims to remedy these disruptions. In Reiki treatment, practitioners will place their hands over various parts of a person’s body and transfer healing energy. During a session, practitioners may focus their energy on the sources of specific conditions. Typically, a single treatment session will last 45–90 minutes. Research has not shown Reiki to have any direct healing properties. However, some clients claim Reiki helps reduce stress and anxiety by using it as a complementary treatment.
A person should always consult their doctor before engaging in complementary therapies.
