Grounding with Affirmations

While within the field of mindfulness, a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, acknowledging and calmly accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, ‘grounding’ refers to techniques to stay “in the moment,” the ability to come back to the present with sustained attention; skills for our mind and body when returning to a place of trauma or stress. Practicing mindfulness meditation while focusing only on one’s regulated breath can rein in powerful sensations and help us feel emotionally grounded.

With your eyes closed, bring yourself to a place of stillness. Straighten your back and feel every worry, anger or fear fly away from you as you find your peace. Take a deep breath. Let the air fill your nostrils, your throat, your lungs. Then gently let it out and open your eyes. When your mind has cleared and all around you is silent, repeat the following to yourself:

I am alive.

I am present.

I am safe.

If you only thought these or whispered them the first time, now try saying them out loud.

I am alive.

I am present.

I am safe.

One last time, louder this time, and more assertive. Believe in what you are saying.

 I am alive.

I am present.

I am safe.

  1. Walk on grass barefoot and feel the earth under your feet. You can walk on grass, dirt, or wet sand. …
  2. Connect with nature. Have physical contact with a tree or other living organism from Earth.
  3. Use an Earthing Mat, Earthing Bands, or Earthing Patches while you meditate.

Once you find your breath, go through the following steps to help ground yourself:

  • 5: Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you.
  • 4: Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch around you.
  • 3: Acknowledge THREE things you hear.
  • 2: Acknowledge TWO things you can smell.
  • 1: Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste.

Summary

Bring yourself into the present moment with the simple mantra, “I am.” If you want to cultivate a specific energy, add a word to place focus on what you are becoming in this moment. I am strong. I am peaceful. I am present.
